Thread rolling

Cold-rolled external threads up to M64 — strong, smooth, precise and uniform forms produced with no chip loss.

Cold thread rolling machine forming work-hardened external threads on a shaft at Robb & Carter

Overview

Thread rolling is the preferred method for producing strong, smooth, precise and uniform external thread forms. Unlike cutting, grinding and chasing, thread rolling is a cold forging process that displaces material rather than removing it, so it can be performed on any ductile metal. The rolled thread is work-hardened with smooth, continuous-grain flanks and no chip loss, giving a stronger thread than a cut equivalent. Since 2017 we have the capacity to thread roll material up to M64, dependent on material hardness and thread pitch, on two dedicated thread rolling machines.

Typical applications

  • High-strength bolt and stud threads
  • Hot-forged bolt threads
  • Recoverable anchor screw threads
  • Tie-rod and actuator threads
  • Ductile-metal fastener threads to drawing
